School building is a class act

THE final phase of a £6m-plus revamp of an island secondary school is now complete and being put to good use by its students.
Delighted youngsters and staff at Walney School have moved into the new pupil support unit this term.
The modern facility, which has been created within the original school building, was the final part of the redevelopment project, funded by Cumbria County Council.
The pupil support unit follows the creation of the long-awaited four-court badminton sports hall, and the adjoining new block of 10 spacious new classrooms for humanities, modern foreign languages, music and art, and a series of social spaces.
Also within the main building there is a new science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) multifunction room, a new kitchen and modern service areas and lift access.
The project has been led by Eric Wright Construction, the firm which is also developing the Furness College campus in Barrow.
The scheme has enabled the school to take more pupils as part of the reorganisation of secondary education.
The Walney students have also led a project to rebrand their school. They created a new wave logo and they have brightening up their school corridors by having the theme running throughout the school.
The pupil support unit has been developed in what was the former humanities block. The area boasts interactive white boards and a computer suite.
The school’s leaders have said they are delighted that the development is complete.
Helen Collis, an assistant headteacher at Walney School, said: “Walney School are pleased to now boast state of the art accommodation and facilities to support 21st century pupil learning in a refurbished wing.
“Past pupils will not recognise the changes that have taken place within the original humanities block.
In its place are social spaces for pupils to meet, rooms to facilitate small group work and individual support.The area can now be fully accessed through a lift. Facilities for young people with physical disabilities are modern and up to date including a life skills kitchen, physiotherapy, medical and review rooms.
“This now completes the transformation of Walney School into a genuine 21st century facility for personalised learning which bring to fruition the fully accessible, inclusive learning resources for all.”
Walney School has thanked Cumbria County Council, Capita and Eric Wright Construction.
The school in Sandy Gap Lane hires out its sports hall to the community on week nights and weekends.
