Group in cash hunt to carry on work

A COMMUNITY group is fighting to find funding so it can carry out its work for another year.
Friends of Walney’s running costs are around £20,000 annually, and every year it faces the challenge of finding that much money.
And with larger charities, which usually offer grants to small community groups, having to tighten their belts because of government cuts, the impact on the availability of funding is being felt.
Friends of Walney project co-ordinator, Alan Docker, said: “It’s definitely difficult.
“I’m just looking now to see where we could go but it’s a bit unknown at the moment.
“Usually we get about £11,000 from Barrow Borough Council and Cumbria County Council between them, but we’re not even guaranteed that.
“We haven’t got anything definite from anybody yet.
“But we really hope there’ll be something for us locally.”
Even if it gets its usual funding from the councils, Friends of Walney will still be looking to fill a £5,000 shortfall between what they have and what they need.
The group’s money goes into planning, co-ordinating and fundraising for the various different projects it carries out every year.
Its major projects have included the £90,000 revamp of the Spring Mount Centre in Amphitrite Street, creating and running the island’s youth club and the refurbishment of the Mill Lane Pond.
Now it is in the stages of planning a revamp for the pond area behind Mill Lane Adult Learning Centre.
Mr Docker said the group was not planning any other major tasks.
He said: “At the moment we’re reluctant to take on new projects because we just don’t know whether there’s going to be the means to see them through.
“We’re very much in the dark because there’s all sorts of means being pulled for everyone.
“But we’re looking forward to helping with next year’s fun run, we’re always busy keeping the youth club running and we keep an eye on the Mill Lane Pond.
“There’s always plenty to be doing just trying to make Walney a better place.”
